ROCKFORD, IL — A police dog in Rockford has died after she was shot in the line of duty Sunday, according to authorities.

K-9 Nyx and her handler were pursuing Malik Trotter shortly after 3 p.m. in the 2800 block of 11th Street in connection with a domestic incident, authorities said. The pair followed Trotter over a fence, with Nyx quickly catching up to Trotter, according to a news release from the Winnebago County state's attorney's office. He was placed into custody and taken to the hospital, the news release said.
