EDGEWATER, MD β€” An Edgewater youth secured the title of youth world champion at the 2019 Hempel Youth Sailing World Championships held recently in Gdynia, Poland. Maddie Hawkins earned a gold medal in the girls international 420 fleet with her sailing partner Yumi Yoshiyasu of
Houston, Texas.

Hawkins and Yoshiyasu carried a 22-point lead ahead of the rest of the fleet. Yoshiyasu told U.S. Sailing that winning the gold medal was a "somewhat unexpected" and exciting experience.

β€œIt was really overwhelming because we’ve never won an i420 regatta and winning the biggest event of the year was extremely exciting," she stated in a release.
