Authorities said a 2001 Dodge Dakota pick-up truck, driven by the Bowie resident, was going east on Birdsville Road and approaching the same intersection.

Police said the Dodge tried to turn left onto Solomons Island Road in front of the Kenworth, but the dump truck could not avoid hitting the pick-up truck.

The pick-up truck then spun into the southbound lane of Solomons Island Road, officers said.

Authorities said a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe was heading south on Solomons Island Road and could not avoid hitting the pick-up truck.

Police said the dump truck crossed over the southbound lane, traveled up an embankment and overturned.

The dump truck then caught on fire and the flames engulfed the cab, officers said.

Authorities said the dump truck driver was stuck inside.

Maryland State Police Trooper 2 helicoptered the pick-up truck driver to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center in Largo, a press release said.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department is still investigating.
