ROCKVILLE, MD — A contemporary art exhibition that challenges the cross-cultural ideas of beauty and perception of class is coming to Rockville Town Square.

Baltimore-based artist Amy Boone-McCreesh is behind the colorful work, "Room with a View," which will be on display at VisArts' 355 Pod Space Gallery between Oct. 16, 2020 and Jan. 17, 2021.

Boone-McCreesh works with custom fabrics and paper, which she then scans, cuts, and layers to create pieces that she says "aim to mimic the seemingly arbitrary lines that are drawn to signify cultural markers of luxury, mass production, and the defining features of access."

"Class is evident from the view outside one's window, the level of access and choice in self-care, to the types of fabric in a home. I use an abstracted version of this materialistic visual vocabulary to ask questions that challenge classist structures, but also to tantalize with maximalist aesthetics," Boone-McCreesh said. "The utilization of technology and digital components are combined with the handmade processes to create a direct shift in value and labor. These decisions aim to mimic the seemingly arbitrary lines that are drawn to signify cultural markers of luxury, mass production, and the defining features of access."

Boone-McCreesh's exhibition will be on display for public viewing starting Friday. There is no admissions fee, but there is a suggested donation of $5 to visit VisArts' galleries.

There will also be a virtual reception and artist talk on Friday, Nov. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The 355 Pod Space Gallery was launched in 2017 as a partnership between VisArts and Rockville Town Square. The space, which gives local artists an opportunity to showcase their work, is located on Hungerford Drive near the entrance to Rockville Town Square's Garage A.
