MARYLAND — A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the city of Baltimore and 13 Maryland counties Monday into the evening. The National Weather Service earlier issued a flood watch for the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. region that went into effect at 4 p.m. and continues until midnight.

The thunderstorm watch is in effect until 10 p.m. for Allegany, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Prince George's, Queen Anne's and Washington counties.

The storms bring the possibility of 60 mph wind gusts, the weather service said.

"Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall," the NWS said. "This could injure those outdoors, as well as damage homes and vehicles. Roadways may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles."

Afternoon and evening thunderstorms may bring heavy rainfall to the region late Monday afternoon. Excessive rainfall may cause flash flooding in portions of the District, Maryland, and Virginia on Monday afternoon.

Flooding may occur in D.C. and the following areas in Maryland: Anne Arundel, Carroll, Central and Southeast Howard, Central and Southeast Montgomery, Northern Baltimore, Northwest Harford, Northwest Howard, Northwest Montgomery, and Prince George's counties.

Cities in the flood watch include: Baltimore, Silver Spring, Bowie, Annapolis, Manassas, Odenton, Westminster, Bethesda, College Park, Reisterstown, Columbia, Severna Park, Greenbelt, Germantown, Rockville, Jarrettsville, Arnold, Suitland-Silver Hill, Gaithersburg, Severn, Eldersburg, Clinton, Glen Burnie, Ellicott City, Cockeysville, Laurel, and Aberdeen.

Rainfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour may occur, but some areas may see greater accumulations, according to NWS. With the recent rainy weather, Baltimore and D.C. may be more susceptible to flash flooding.

AccuWeather.com said the chances for the strongest storms are late afternoon into Monday evening.

Isolated severe weather will be a possibility with strong wind gusts as the primary threat. The severe threat should begin in portions of the Appalachians during the afternoon before continuing eastward during the evening.

"Along the heavily populated Interstate 95 corridor, from Connecticut to central Virginia, the arrival of storms may snarl traffic as they coincide with the evening commute," AccuWeather said. "Later at night, while places such as Boston may see rain, even the strongest thunderstorms will likely have weakened below severe limits."
