MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — A 36-year-old Montgomery County Police officer died Friday morning after an incapacitating medical event led him to crash his car, police said in a news release.

Douglas Haggerty was driving east on Spencerville Road when the medical problem occurred. He did not hit any other cars when he crashed, police said. His daughter was in the car with him and was able to get out and call 911.

Police and Fire and Rescue crews responded to the call and performed life-saving measures, but Haggerty was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police do not believe that the injuries from the accident caused his death.

Haggerty's daughter was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and has since been released, Chief Marcus Jones said at a news conference Friday afternoon.

“He loved Montgomery County police, and he loved Montgomery County," Jones said of Haggerty.

Haggerty became an officer with Montgomery County Police in July 2010. He was working as an officer in the Rockville District and previously worked as a patrol officer in Silver Spring.

“He never hesitated to help a struggling rookie and had an innate ability to help victims feel comfortable at ease," said Jones.

County Executive Marc Elrich extended his sympathy to Haggerty's family, friends and colleagues.

"We are greatly saddened by this tragic accident that took the life of this beloved man of valor who was known and appreciated for his bright disposition," said Elrich in the statement. "Officer Haggerty served as a patrol officer and was dedicated to protecting our community. He leaves behind a legacy of commitment and service to the people of this County that should serve as an example to us all. He will be missed but never forgotten."

Services will be planned for Haggerty in the coming days, Jones said.

“We have lost a true servant in our community and it is a tragedy,” the police chief said.
