Montgomery County Schools Change Schedule Ahead Of Friday Snow

Montgomery County Public Schools have made a schedule change since snow is expected to fall much of Friday.

ROCKVILLE, MD — All Montgomery County Public Schools and offices will be closed Friday, Jan. 19, because of expected snowfall.

When the school system is closed, all schools, administrative offices and community activities are canceled, including athletic practices and events. Private childcare programs are also canceled.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Montgomery County, with an expected snowfall of 1 to 3 inches beginning at 4 a.m. Friday and lasting throughout the day. Up to 5 inches of snow is possible in some areas of the county.

In its Code Red alert the school district said officials are exploring make-up options for lessons in the future.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for most of Maryland from 4 a.m. on Friday until 1 a.m. Saturday.

The new storm will bring widespread snow, especially Friday morning. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected in portions of central and southern Maryland on Friday. Residents should plan on slippery road conditions that will affect the morning commute, the NWS said.

The Arctic air coming in behind the storm over the weekend will likely deliver the lowest temperatures of the winter so far in the mid-Atlantic region, AccuWeather said.

"Saturday is raw, with gusty winds and temperatures struggling to reach the low to mid-20s despite mainly clear skies," the Capital Weather Gang said. "Another cold night is on tap, with lows ranging through the teens."
