New Orchestra of Washington Presents 'Peter and the Wolf' and 'The Carnival of the Animals'

Children are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite animals.

The New Orchestra of Washington, directed by Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez, presents a Family Concert on Monday, January 18, at 11 am and 2:30 pm at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington. The program includes two of the most beloved children’s works: Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals. This concert features renowned actor and narrator, Michael Boudewyns. Children are encouraged to come dressed like their favorite animal or wear a t-shirt with animals pictured.

Prokofiev’s timeless musical tale of boy vs. wolf is brought to life in Really Inventive Stuff’s vaudeville-inspired performance. The Philadelphia Inquirer loved it: “using simplicity as a form of genius…immensely likable and wonderfully adept… (bringing) a tone of enchantment.” Narrator Michael Boudewyns is co-founder of Really Inventive Stuff; a theatre company that creates playful, vaudeville-inspired performances for orchestras. The Carnival of the Animals, a musical suite of fourteen movements each representing a different animal, is one of French composer Camille Saint-Saëns’s most loved works.

Directed by Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez, the New Orchestra of Washington is dedicated to making music relevant to new generations of audiences through virtuosic performances that combine a diversity of genres with fresh interpretations of classic works. Unconstrained by the structure or repertoire of traditional orchestras, NOW offers its audience the opportunity to get up close and personal with works usually reserved for symphony orchestras in cavernous halls. Founded in 2012 by rising stars of the Washington area’s professional community, NOW is a chamber symphony of extraordinary musicians whose skill embodies mutual respect and admiration for each other’s artistry and a common belief in the importance of revitalizing the role of music in our lives. In 2015 NOW recorded and produced its first album featuring Gustav Mahler’s Fourth Symphony in a chamber version by Klaus Simon which will be released fall 2015. Artistic Director Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez first conceived of the New Orchestra of Washington while hearing a chamber orchestra performing Mahler. Linda Mabbs is featured as the soprano soloist.
