Wegmans In MD Recalls One Of Its Pasta Sauces Over An Allergy Alert For Fish

MARYLAND — The Wegmans grocery chain has recalled its Italian Classics Diavolo Pasta Sauce sold in Maryland stores for an allergy alert. It may contain undeclared anchovy fish, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.

LiDestri Foods is recalling 24-ounce jars of Wegmans Italian Classics Diavolo pasta sauce. The product was sold at Wegmans stores in Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia between April 3, 2023 and May 16, 2023.

The product can be identified as a mason jar with red pasta sauce, called Diavolo. The only expiration date affected is March 31, 2025, with the code F0589:

No illnesses have been reported to date, the FDA said in its recall notice.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to anchovy run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the pasta sauce, the FDA said.

The recall began after a consumer complaint that the Wegmans Italian Classics Diavolo Pasta Sauce containing anchovies was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of the fish.

Investigators determined the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in LiDestri Foods’ packaging processes.

Customers who have purchased Wegmans Italian Classics Diavolo pasta sauce with a March 31, 2025 expiration date and code F0589 should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
