MARYLAND — A wintry mix of weather is expected to pass through much of Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic states Saturday through Sunday night, with the greatest impacts of snow and ice to the west of the Blue Ridge and Catoctin mountains, according to the National Weather Service.

Two to 6 inches of snow and ice are expected to blanket the area west of I-15. To the east, heavy rains will likely reduce accumulations. If a low pressure system passes further south, cold air could linger over the metro-D.C. region, especially to the west of I-95.

The only measurable snow recorded last season was .2 inches on Feb. 1, 2023, at Baltimore Washington International Airport. The yearly average snowfall amount for BWI is 19.3 inches. The last time Washington, D.C., saw an accumulation of 1 inch of snow was on Jan. 28-29.

"The storm is expected to blossom across the Southeastern states to start the weekend, likely bringing along a swath of heavy rain and thunderstorms before pulling northward," according to Accuweather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham.

The wintry weather will also affect travel both on roads and at airports in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region, with Friday expected to be the best day for travel, according to the Accuweather forecast.

"The most significant wintry effects from the storm will be limited to about 12 hours or so from late Saturday into Sunday evening," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Courtney Travis.

Friday will be mostly sunny with a high temperature near 42, with a northwest wind of 5 mph, according to NWS. The temperature will drop to around 30 overnight.

A chance of snow is expected around 10 a.m. on Saturday, with snow becoming more likely into the afternoon and possibly mixing with rain, according to NWS. As the thermometer climbs to near 40, the mix will switch over to rain, which will continue into the Saturday night.
