Dunkin' Gives Away Free Donuts In MA On National Donut Day

MASSACHUSETTS — Donut lovers rejoice! National Donut Day is back, and Dunkin' is offering free donuts to everyone who buys a drink Friday.

National Donut Day originally started in 1938, when the Salvation Army decided the first Friday in June would be National Donut Day, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Red Sox legend Tim Wakefield even showed his support by handing out donuts to customers at the Hingham Dunkin' Friday.

According to their website, the story of Dunkin' began in 1948 with a donut and coffee restaurant in Quincy called "Open Kettle." Founder William Rosenberg served donuts for 5 cents and cups of coffee for ten cents. After a brainstorming session with executives, Rosenberg renamed the restaurant "Dunkin' Donuts" in 1950.
