MASSACHUSETTS — Dunkies, Dunks, Dunkin', Dunkin' Donuts. Whatever you call it, there are nearly 1,100 locations in Massachusetts, with one location for roughly every 6,500 residents.

Dunkin’ outnumbers Starbucks nearly 4-to-1 in Massachusetts; the world’s largest coffee chain has about 280 locations statewide.

Dunkin’ is synonymous with Massachusetts. The state’s love affair with the coffee chain was parodied in a Saturday Night Live skit starring Casey Affleck as an obnoxious customer.

Massachusetts has the second most Dunkin’ locations when adjusted for population, with one location for roughly every 6,500 residents. It was edged out by New Hampshire, which has one location per roughly 6,350 residents.

Massachusetts has 1,083 Dunkin’ locations as of late April, which is the second most out of any state. New York has more than 1,400 locations.

Boston unsurprisingly has the most Dunkin’ locations, with about 85 locations as of late April.

The first Dunkin' Donuts opened in Quincy, Mass. in 1950 and became a franchise operation five years later. It now has more than 9,100 U.S. and 11,300 total worldwide locations, according to the company's website. It serves more than 3 million customers daily. The company re-branded to Dunkin' in 2019 to emphasize it offers more than just donuts and coffee.

Dunkin'is in 44 states plus Washington, D.C. The greatest concentration of stores is in the eastern U.S., particularly the northeast. Dunkin's has made a foray into West Coast markets (see how Starbucks and Dunkin' compare in California), but Starbucks is still king.
