MASSACHUSETTS — A heat advisory for Massachusetts set to expire Friday has been extended into the weekend, with uncomfortable heat expected at least through Saturday, according to forecasts.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory Thursday, with heat indices — a measure of air temperature and humidity combined — expected to reach between 90 and 100 across the state. The advisories cover a large section of Massachusetts from Springfield to Worcester, Lawrence, Boston and south to Plymouth. Cape Cod is not included in the advisory.

Friday morning, the weather service extended the advisory until 7 p.m. Saturday. The first part of the weekend will only be slightly cooler, with high temperatures generally in the high 80s. Saturday will also come with the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, mostly after 3 p.m., according to forecasts.

"There could be a window Saturday of somewhat dry weather, before storms re-fire late in the day from SW to NE. Not quite as hot given cloud cover, but still highs 85-90 and with dew points in the low to mid 70s," a Friday morning forecast said.

Sunday temperatures will still be warm with persistent humidity. Showers with heavy downpours may roll across the state during the afternoon hours, according to the weather service.
