ARLINGTON, MA — Applications for Arlington's first-ever Civic Academy are due by noon on Friday.

Registration opened last month for the academy, which teaches residents about how the town works and how they can get involved in town government. Organizers said the knowledge gained in the academy could be helpful to residents interested in joining a town committee or Town Meeting.

Among the topics discussed will be: an overview of town governance, an introduction to services like Health & Human Services, Recreation, Libraries, Public Works and Public Safety, and details about finance and budgeting.

The Civic Academy meets every Tuesday evening (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) for six weeks from Sept. 14 to Oct. 19. Officials said they have room for up 20 participants in the program.

Participants must be Arlington residents 18 years of age or older. While all residents are welcome to apply, preference will be given to residents with less than three years of experience serving on a town committee or in Town Meeting, officials said.
