ARLINGTON, MA — Arlington police are investigating the theft of an "undetermined amount of mail" stolen from a postal box early Monday morning.

According to police, the mail thief struck around 2 a.m. Monday at a mailbox at 10 Court St. — right in front of the main U.S. Postal Service building.

"Thefts from Postal Service mailboxes are an ongoing issue that we have been investigating with law enforcement partners for some time now, and as we see increasing numbers of such thefts around the region, we recommend postal service customers take precautions," Chief Julie Flaherty said in a news release. "Anyone who left a check in the mailbox at 10 Court Street over the weekend should cancel the check and notify their bank immediately."

Arlington police advised residents to drop off mail inside postal service offices rather than in blue mailboxes until authorities wrap up the investigation. The federal U.S. Postal Inspection Service is assisting with the investigation.
