Arlington & Nagaokakyo celebrate 35th sister city anniversary!

Special guests include The Mayor of Nagaokakyo and his delegation

2019 marks the 35th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Arlington, MA and Nagaokakyo, Japan. In celebration of this event, Mayor Kengo Nakakoji of Nagaokakyo will visit Arlington with his delegation. This will be Mayor Nakakoji's 1st visit to Arlington since his election.

2019 also marks the 15th anniversary of the student exchange program. In celebration, students from Nagaokakyo will be arriving in Arlington on 4/23 as part of the annual student exchange program. While visiting Arlington, the students stay with volunteer host families. Arlington students in grades 7 - 12 are welcome to apply for the student trip to Japan each July.

School, Town and State officials will gather at The Whittemore House on 4/28 for dinner and entertainment to celebrate these special anniversaries. The Consul General of Japan in Boston, Consul General Michii is expected to attend the dinner.

A bench emblazoned with logos representing Arlington and Nagaokakyo, Japan is located near the Town Hall flagpole. The bench honors the late Dick Smith, who fostered the sister-city relationship starting in 1975.
