Arlington Police Remember Officer Killed With Own Weapon In July 1901

Officer Garrett Cody died 121 years ago while responding to a call in which a fruit peddler had been assaulted with a knife.

ARLINGTON, MA — On Friday, Arlington police remembered Officer Garrett Cody, who died while on duty 121 years ago.

On July 1, 1901, Cody was shot and killed with his own service revolver after responding to a call in which a fruit peddler had been assaulted with a knife, according to Officer Down Memorial Page.

When Cody arrived at the scene, the suspect grabbed his service weapon and fled. Cody chased him to a property along Alewife Brook, where the suspect shot him. After Cody fell, the man walked over to him and shot him several more times.

Cody was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he died several hours later. The suspect was caught shortly after the shooting and later declared insane and committed at the Worcester Insane Asylum.

Cody had been with the Arlington Police Department for nine years and was survived by his wife and five children.
