ARLINGTON, MA — The Arlington Select Board has approved a five-month pilot program for temporarily expanded on-street overnight parking for residents.

The townwide pilot, which was approved on June 26, is limited to 125 new permits issued on a first come, first served basis.

“While the overnight parking ban remains generally in effect across Arlington, this trial program will allow residents and Town leaders to evaluate the benefits, drawbacks and feasibility of expanding current temporary permits, waivers and exemptions,” said Select Board chair Eric Helmuth. “The majority of the Board believes that the pilot balances requests from some residents to try additional resident parking options with cautions expressed by others about potential negative effects on streets and neighborhoods.”

The pilot program will be administered by the Office of the Select Board and the following will apply:

  • Permits will cost $150 and will be effective Aug. 1-Dec. 31, 2023.
  • Limit of one sticker per household and no more than two permits per property.
  • Vehicle registration and proof of residence are required when applying.
  • Vehicles that have this sticker affixed will be able to park in front of, or adjacent, to their residence overnight during the pilot period.
  • Each permit holder is assigned a spot in a municipal lot to use in the event of a weather emergency street parking ban.
  • At the conclusion of the five-month pilot, the permits will expire and Select Board will evaluate the program before deciding whether or not to renew or expand it.

To apply, interested residents will need to bring an application form, required documents, and payment to the Office of the Select Board when the application becomes available on July 17.
