ARLINGTON, MA — The Bluebikes bike share program will return to Arlington this week, with five on-street stations set to be installed April 8.

These stations include:

  • Broadway at Grafton Street
  • Linwood Street at Minuteman Bikeway
  • Mass Ave at Grafton Street
  • Railroad Lot at Minuteman Bikeway
  • Mass Ave at Broadway

The Mass. Ave. at Broadway bike share station could not open last fall due to conflicts with the Arlington Center Sidewalk Project and will be installed for the first time.

The Magnolia/Thorndike Field at Bikeway station remained in place during the winter to be available year-round for bike share rentals. When including this station, Arlington will have a total of six bike share stations as part of the Bluebikes system.

Arlington's stations were installed as part of Bluebikes' summer 2020 system expansion, which connects Arlington with existing stations in Somerville, Cambridge, Brookline, Everett and Boston, as well as other new stations in Chelsea, Newton, Revere, and Watertown. The expansion allows Arlington residents to use bike share to access other communities in the system for work and recreation.

The company's move into Arlington was supported by an $80,000 grant from MassDOT. The grant required a local match of $20,000, which was approved by Town Meeting on June 15.

The expansion is also supported by Lyft, the transportation network company that manages Bluebikes' operations. Lyft contributed more than $100,000 in bike share equipment to each new community participating in the program to assist with the start-up costs of the system. Blue Cross Blue Shield is a title sponsor of the Bluebikes system.
