First Wings Open At New Arlington High School

The opening of the performing arts and STEAM wings mark the end of Phase 1 of the project.

ARLINGTON, MA — The first wings of the new Arlington High School opened on Monday, marking the end of Phase 1 of the project.

The new STEAM – science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics – wing features 16 classrooms, 17 science labs, five visual art studios, three interdisciplinary maker-spaces, a 120-seat discourse lab and several sustainable elements, like four-story light wells.

The performing arts wing contains band and chorus rooms, practice rooms and a digital production lab. Its 826-seat auditorium, with a 2,140-square-foot stage, green room and fly loft, is expected to open in early April.

"The building realizes an educational and community vision that was over 8 years in the making," Arlington High School Principal Matthew Janger said in a statement. "We are excited to take the next step to bringing the educational vision to life in this amazing space."

In the next phase of the project, part of the existing facility will be demolished to build the new humanities, district administration and preschool wing. That phase is expected to be completed in September 2023, with the project slated for completion in 2024.

"As we enter the next phase of construction, we appreciate the community's patience and ongoing support," Jeff Thielman, chair of the AHS Building Committee, said. "The next phase of the project will be the most intensive, but the 21st century educational facility we are building will be worth it."
