Obituary: Cary Coovert, 71, Of Arlington

Coovert, who passed away Sunday following a bicycle accident, is remembered as a world traveler and lover of the outdoors.

Cary G. Coovert, 71, of Arlington, died on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington from injuries sustained in a bicycle accident on the Minuteman Bikeway in Lexington.

Cary was born on May 22, 1947 in Alabama to Evelyn Jane (Smith) Coovert and James Woodrow Coovert. His siblings include Bette Jane Leman (Jerry) of Michigan and Alan Coovert of Texas. He was predeceased by his sister Debra Coovert. Cary was the beloved husband of Robin M. Lord, to whom he was married for 28 years, and the devoted father of Marisol Lord Coovert and Neva Lord Coovert, all of Arlington. Cary is also survived by his aunt Mary Margaret Onstott of California and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Since his father made his career in the military, Cary and his siblings were self-proclaimed “Army Brats,” stationed at Frankfurt and Goppingen in Germany and at Ft. Benning (GA) and Fort Hood (TX) in the US.

Cary graduated from the University of Texas in 1970. He was a Marine reservist during the Vietnam era. After he relocated to the Boston area – his brother describes him as a reluctant ex-pat from Texas, he earned his MBA from Boston College in 1986.

Cary had a career as a software engineer in digital marketing. In his younger years, he was active in the Boy Scouts. He was a world traveler, and his adventures included climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro and Machu Picchu. More recently he traveled with Robin to South and Central America to form their family through adoption. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hiker and cyclist. In warmer months he commuted daily to his job by bike. He was an avid Patriot’s fan.

The family would especially like to thank the Lexington first responders and the caregivers at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center as well as their wonderful neighbors who continue to gather around them and offer support at this time.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Mass on Friday, March 29 at 11:30 am at St. Agnes Church, 30 Medford Street, Arlington. Burial will be private.
