Obituary: Homer Ypsilantis, Former Greek Orthodox Church Official

Homer worked as a nuclear chemist and served St. Athanasius The Great Greek Orthodox in Arlington for more than 50 years.

ARLINGTON, MA – Homer Nicholas Ypsilantis, of Arlington, Mass., passed away peacefully on June 27, 2018. Beloved husband of Georgia (Lempesis) Ypsilantis. Devoted father of Nicholas H. Ypsilantis and his wife Kathy, Evan H. Ypsilantis and his wife Effie, and Mark H. Ypsilantis and his wife Jane. Devoted grandfather of Christina, Alexander, Everett, Evan H., II, Luke, Petra, and Caterina. Brother of Evan N. Ypsilantis and the late James Ypsilantis, and the late Katina Ypsilantis. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was a member of St. Athanasius The Great Greek Orthodox in Arlington, MA for more than 50 years, having served as its President, Treasurer, and Parish Council in excess of 20 years. In 1995, he was the recipient of the Metropolis of Boston Laity Award. He was a Boston University Graduate in the fields of Biology and Chemistry, Class of 1952. He was a Nuclear Chemist.

He was also a veteran of the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict, as 1st Lieutenant/Co. Commander, 8th Engineer Combat Battalion, and 1st Calvary Division in Korea and Japan. He attended Officers Candidate School and was commissioned in 1953 in Ft. Belvoir, VA. Past Commander American Legion, Post #324, Life Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Member of the American Society of Military Engineers, and member AHEPA Chapter 406.

Funeral Services on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at St. Athanasius The Great Greek Orthodox Church, 4 Appleton St., Arlington, MA at 10AM. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, June 29, 2018 from 4PM to 8PM at the church. Relatives and friends kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the above named church. Burial in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA.
