Beverly's Third Wheel In Good Company As New Cabot Street Bike Shop

BEVERLY, MA — Trey and Lindsay Barth are hoping their new bicycle shop on Cabot Street is one Third Wheel that is embraced and fits perfectly in place among the downtown Beverly business community.

"We love the Beverly community and it's always been something we planned on doing," she told Patch on Thursday ahead of the shop's grand opening at 78 Cabot Street on Friday. "Trey has wanted to open a bike shop and this community feels right for it."

Trey Barth told Patch he has worked in bike shops for more than two decades in sales and as a mechanic and wanted to open a different type of shop in Beverly that did not necessarily always cater to the hard-core cycling community.

"We wanted to start a new shop that we community-based and more focused on casual, lifestyle riding," he said.

Lindsay Barth, who said she recently stepped away from her role as the executive director of Beverly Main Streets, said the fall opening came a bit ahead of schedule after the couple found the space quickly and were able to redesign it. She said the October opening will hopefully allow them to create a following amid the cycling crowd in the city and be ready for the spring rush.

"We also recognize that a lot of people bike year-round now," she said. "We are starting with a small selection of hand-picked inventory of products that we like and ride with ourselves, and then build out the inventory from there."

The couple began to bring that more casual North Shore cycling community together this summer by organizing a series of "social rides" where between six and 12 people would get together for rides that ranged from 6 to 15 miles.

"The space needed a lot of work so we thought of it as a way to let people we are here and the shop is coming," she said. "They are nice and slow rides that are easy for people to come in and join. We wanted to keep them inclusive and welcoming."

She said Third Wheel's first fall ride as an open business is set for Nov. 5 at 2 p.m.

"It's been kind of this fateful thing where there is something we wanted to do and now we are excited to bring it here to Beverly," she said. "We happened to find an amazing spot on Cabot Street to do it."

Third Wheel is open Tuesdays through Fridays from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
