BEVERLY, MA — Independence Day is fast approaching so it's time to find out where you can celebrate in and around Beverly. Area events include fireworks, festivals and other Fourth of July fun.

To help you fit it all in on your 4th of July calendar, Patch has put together a guide to what's going on in Beverly and the surrounding areas.

Beverly will host its annual fireworks display on July 4 near West Beach. Wristbands will be required to enter West Beach all day on the 4th for the fireworks. Only West Beach Sticker holders may enter the beach on July 4 prior to 5 p.m. After 5 p.m. non-sticker holders with wristbands will be allowed on the beach for the fireworks.

Wristbands are $20 in advance of the event and $25 on July 4. Tickets will not be sold at the gate after 5 p.m. Tickets are available at The Book Shop at Beverly Farms, Cork & Cash, Daily Printing and Prides Crossing Confections.

Security measures imposed for the fireworks include no alcoholic beverages and no glass containers allowed on West Beach on the day of the event. All coolers and containers must be removed from the beach on that day.

No fireworks, firecrackers, or sparklers will be allowed. Uniformed officers will be enforcing the rules and violators may be subject to prosecution.

The annual Horribles Parade will also take off from the Hasting House at 8 a.m., there will be a softball game at Dix Park at 10:30 a.m., there will be kids races and games at West Beach at 2 p.m., music starts at West Beach at 5 p.m. and a Shore Illumination & Flare Dedication at West Beach will be at 8:45 p.m.

Today, Americans celebrate the birth of a new nation with fireworks, parades, concerts, and family gatherings and barbecues. Celebrations, though, predate by centuries the designation of Independence Day as a federal holiday, which didn’t happen until 1941.

During the pivotal summer of 1776, the pre-Revolutionary celebrations honoring King George III’s birthday were replaced with mock funerals as a symbolic break from the crown.

It was an exciting time in Philadelphia — the Continental Congress voted to break from the crown and, two days later on July 4, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the original 13 colonies —New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland. Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia — to adopt the Declaration of Independence.

The first annual commemoration of the nation’s independence was in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, while the Revolutionary War was ongoing. Fireworks have been part of Fourth of July festivities since the first celebration in Philadelphia.
