February 15, 2019

Braintree, MA – Dr. Martha Smith-Blackmore, the veterinarian whose testimony helped convict the abuser of a tortured young dog known as Puppy Doe, has launched The Animal Doe Project. An event in celebration is being held at Widowmaker Brewery on Friday, Dec. 15 from 6-9.

Titled “For the Love of Animals,” the event is designed to bring together animal lovers, volunteers, activists and workers in response to gains made on behalf of animals. Information will be available on pending initiatives that are currently winding their way through the Massachusetts legislature.

Co-hosting the event is Mass Coalition to End Puppy Mills, a statewide group raising awareness about the connection between puppy mills and pet stores. The Coalition worked closely with Boston City Councilor Matt O’Malley to pass the Boston “puppy mill bill,” which bans the sale of cats and dogs from puppy mills in the city of Boston. Similar bans followed in Cambridge and Stoneham.

A statewide bill “An Act Banning the Retail Sale of Dogs and Cats” was filed by Sen. Patrick O’Connor & Rep. Natalie Higgins. Information on the ban and other key legislative initiatives will be available at the event.
