Chelmsford's Population Has Grown By 7.7% In 10 Years

According to U.S. Census data released last week, the number of residents in the town has grown from 33,802 to 36,392.

CHELMSFORD, MA — The Town of Chelmsford has added about 2,590 residents over the last ten years, according to the 2020 U.S. Census data released last week.

The data shows that Newton's population grew by 7.7% from 2010 to 2020, with a population of 33,802 people ten years ago and 36,392 as of April 1, 2020.

Middlesex County as a whole experienced a higher population growth of 8.6%, adding 128,917 residents to reach a total of 1,632,002, and Massachusetts' growth was slightly lower at 7.4%, adding 482,288 residents for a total of 7,029,917.

Last week's 2020 Census data is still somewhat preliminary, with the bureau set to release data on undercounts and overcounts next year. The count also took place amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have affected response rates.
