Crews Battle 2-Alarm Fire In Melrose

MELROSE, MA — A two-alarm fire burned a home in Melrose early Saturday morning, drawing crews to the School Street area around 4 a.m., according to scanner traffic and multiple social media reports.

WHDH reported on Saturday morning that a pet cat died of smoke inhalation due to the fire. The rest of the home's occupants were able to escape, according to the station.

Multiple area fire departments provided mutual aid in Melrose amid what was a busy series of calls for firefighters across the region.

Less than 24 hours before this incident, a four-alarm fire in Wakefield drew widespread mutual aid from area departments.

Reading, Stoneham, Melrose, North Reading, Lynnfield, Woburn, Winchester and Wilmington personnel were all on scene helping Wakefield crews, according to Wakefield Fire Chief Michael Sullivan. Burlington, Malden and Lynn firefighters provided station coverage.
