Milford Will Drop Curbside Bulk Waste Option

No, it's not the carts. The town will remove a long-running feature of waste disposal on Aug. 1.

MILFORD, MA — When it comes to trash and recycling collection, Milford residents have it pretty good.

The town doesn't use the often maligned pay-as-you-throw system (like Medway, Holliston, Upton do) unlike almost half the cities and towns in the state. The town also doesn't charge an extra fee for trash collection.

So to keep costs down — and to keep the current system relatively intact — the town will end the longstanding option to dispose of bulk waste at the curb in Milford for free this summer.

"Beginning on Aug. 1, residents are now no longer able to dispose of one bulky waste item per week, which was the norm in previous years. When a resident has an item that is considered to be a bulk item, they will call Harvey, our collection contractor and make the proper arrangements for collection at curbside. A reasonable fee will be charged for this collection," the Milford Board of Health said Wednesday.

Bulk waste — items like furniture, appliances and anything else to big to fit in trash bins — can no longer be feasibly collected using the trucks that come on trash day, the board of health said.

The town is also in the process of rolling out new 95-gallon trash and recycling carts. Find out more about those here.
