SHREWSBURY, MA — All 13 Christmas Tree Shops stores in Massachusetts will close by summer's end, and hundreds are set to lose their jobs as the retailer heads to bankruptcy.

On Friday, the Middleborough-based company alerted state officials that 223 office and warehouse workers were let go. The stores will begin liquidation sales soon with all stores set to close by Aug. 31, according to the Boston Globe.

Shoppers who hold Christmas Tree Shops gift cards should plan to head to a store soon. The chain will stop honoring the cards by July 21, according to WCVB.

Christmas Tree Shops, owned by Handil Holdings LLC, filed for bankruptcy in May and initially planned to keep some of its stores open. The company reversed that decision before July 4, telling a bankruptcy judge that it would close all stores.

The modern incarnation of the chain began in the 1970s with a single store in Yarmouth. The chain was eventually acquired by now-bankrupt Bed, Bath and Beyond, but sold to Handil Holdings in 2020.
