SHREWSBURY, MA — The Shrewsbury Police Department has been awarded a $39,998 grant through the Municipal Road Safety Grant Program. The funds will be used to support traffic and crosswalk enforcement.

The police department said the grant will be used in six separate traffic campaigns throughout the year: Winter Impaired Driving, Distracted Driving, Click it or Ticket, June Speeding, July Speeding, and Summer Impaired Driving.

The department will also be assigning officers to three crosswalk/pedestrian safety campaigns throughout the year.

These assignments consist of plainclothes officers using crosswalks. If the officers observe vehicles failing to yield for pedestrians in crosswalks, they will radio to their fully uniformed partner officers in a marked cruiser to stop the vehicles for violations.

These traffic enforcement and crosswalk campaigns will consist of officers in addition to the normal complement of patrol officers, who will be solely concentrating on these enforcement assignments.

A small portion of the funds will also be used to purchase bicycle safety equipment, which will be distributed to Shrewsbury youths at community events.

Additionally, a portion of the funding will be used to conduct car seat installation and inspection events.

These events will have certified officers available to the community to conduct safety checks free of charge.
