8 MA Stop & Shop Supermarkets Closing: See List

Stop & Shop's parent company Friday announced the closure of 32 stores, including eight in Massachusetts.

WORCESTER, MA — Eight Massachusetts Stop & Shop supermarkets will close as part of the chain's strategy to "position the company for growth," according to a news release.

The chain will shutter 32 stores across the Northeast. The Worcester area will be hit the hardest by the Stop & Shop closures, with two shutting down in that city and neighboring Shrewsbury.

The supermarket chain initially announced plans to close stores in May.

"Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand," Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said in a news release.

The company said it will offer jobs at other supermarket locations to workers whose stores will close.

Here are the eight Stop & Shop stores closing in Massachusetts:

  • 932 North Montello St., Brockton
  • 36 New State Highway, Raynham
  • 341 Plymouth St., Halifax
  • 539-571 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury
  • 165 Needham St., Newton (bfresh Market)
  • 415 Cooley St., Springfield (1600 Boston Rd. and 1277 Liberty St., Springfield will remain open)
  • 545 Lincoln St. Worcester (940 West Boylston St. and 949 Grafton St., Worcester will remain open)
  • 24 Mattakeesett St., Pembroke (125 Church St., Pembroke will remain open)

Stop & Shop will also close five stores in Connecticut, 10 in New Jersey, seven in New York and two in Rhode Island.

The stores will close by the end of 2024, the company announced. Stop & Shop has about 350 stores across the Northeast, and is owned by the Dutch conglomerate Ahold Delhaize.
