1 Shot Dead At 'Nenookaasi' Homeless Encampment In Minneapolis

A man was killed Tuesday night at the homeless encampment located at South 23rd Street and 13th Avenue South in Minneapolis.

MINNEAPOLIS — Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed at the "Nenookaasi" homeless encampment in Minneapolis Tuesday evening.

At about 5:15 p.m., Minneapolis Police Department officers from the 3rd Precinct responded to reports of a shooting at the encampment, which is located at South 23rd Street and 13th Avenue South.

Once inside the encampment, officers found 45-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officer at the scene performed life-saving measures until being relieved by emergency medical services.

The man was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was declared dead.

A Metro Transit bus was brought to the scene to provide warmth and shelter for Nenookaasi residents who were displaced while investigators processed the scene, according to authorities.

Investigators, including forensic scientists and homicide detectives, are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the identity of the man killed.
