BROOKLYN CENTER, MN — Daunte Wright's girlfriend has filed a lawsuit against the late man's mother over money raised through donations on GoFundMe. Benjamin Crump, a civil rights lawyer who represented Wright's family, is also named in the lawsuit.

Chyna Whitaker is the mother and sole guardian of Wright's 3-year-old son, Daunte Jr.

Whitaker was with Wright on April 11, 2021, when he was shot and killed by former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter.

According to the lawsuit filed in Hennepin County on Monday, Crump "promised and assured her up-front that any GoFundMe monies raised through The Daunte Wright Sr. Memorial Fund would be split 50/50 between Daunte, Jr. and the Wright Family."

"However, this did not happen," the lawsuit continues. "Of the approximate $1,039,260 raised through GoFundMe and managed by Crump's law firm, not one single penny has been turned over to Plaintiff for the benefit of Daunte, Jr."
