Mom Dies, 2-Year-Old Injured In South Minneapolis Shooting

The shooting occurred Sunday, and the mother died Wednesday morning at Hennepin Healthcare, police said.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis Police Department is investigating after a mother and 2-year-old were shot Sunday night. The mother died Wednesday morning at Hennepin Healthcare. The child is expected to survive.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the woman and her child were both shot while sitting in their car at approximately 9:23 p.m. on Sunday on the 2900 block of Cedar Avenue.

No arrests have been made.

"I am deeply saddened to learn that the mother of this child has lost her life in such a senseless act of violence," O’Hara said in a statement.

"This incident is a tragic reminder of how gun violence can - and is - tearing apart families in our community."

Police are investigating the sequence of events that led up to the shooting and are working to determine if this was a targeted shooting.

Officers responded to the scene Sunday after a ShotSpotter alerted them to four shots in the area. A suspect fired into the vehicle from the alley, police said.
