MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesotans should stop eating their beloved "Juicy Lucy" burger, according to animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

PETA recently put up a billboard at 500 Central Ave. S.E. in Minneapolis that states, "Juicy Lucys Tear Families Apart" and tells local diners to "go vegan."

The billboard sits on top of Ray J’s American Grill, which is one of the many Twin Cities restaurants that sells their own version of the Juicy Lucy's.

During his visit in 2014, President Barack Obama enjoyed a Juicy Lucy at Matt's Bar & Grill, located in south Minneapolis.

"The bond between a mother cow and her calf is so strong that both cry out for days after they’ve been callously separated to be used by the meat and dairy industries," PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a news release.

"PETA urges everyone to remember the cruelty that’s baked into these burgers and instead choose one of the delicious vegan options currently on the market."

According to PETA, for every person who goes vegan, nearly 200 animals a year are sparred. Going vegan also reduces a person's climate footprint, the group said.
