MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison on Thursday filed a lawsuit in Hennepin County against Shipt, Target corporation's same-day delivery service.

According to Ellison, Shipt misclassified its delivery workers — known as Shipt "Shoppers" — as independent contractors to avoid the cost of providing them with the employment protections guaranteed under Minnesota law.

Shipt deprived potentially thousands of its Minnesota workers of state and local minimum wage protections, local sick and safe time protections, overtime protections, unemployment insurance, and workers’ compensation benefits, according to the attorney general.

"I’m suing Shipt because instead of playing by the rules most Minnesota employers play by, Shipt is taking advantage of Minnesotans to enrich itself while leaving workers to fend for themselves," Ellison said in a news release.

"Unlike other employees, these workers have no clarity on how much they will be paid day-to-day, and they often don’t receive the minimum wage and overtime they’re entitled to."

Ellison said Shipt and other workers who think their employer is misclassifying them should call his office at (651) 296-3353.
