Police To Increase Patrols On Washington County Freeways This Weekend

WASHINGTON COUNTY, MN — Minnesota State Patrol troopers are set to conduct a series of “high-intensity” patrols this weekend on freeways in the Twin Cities east metro.

Troopers will prioritize enforcement of speed limits and seat belt use, while also looking for distracted and impaired drivers, according to a news release from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

The patrols are due to start at 2 p.m. Friday and continue through 8 p.m. Sunday on freeways in Washington, Dakota and Chisago counties.

Troopers conducted a similar series of “high-intensity” patrols May 13-15 in the Brainerd Lakes area and stopped almost 800 vehicles, including 600 for speeding, while 14 drivers were arrested for driving while impaired, according to the release.

The State Patrol said it hopes the increased police presence on east metro highways will encourage drivers to “make safe driving decisions.”

More than 150 people have been killed in traffic-related crashes on Minnesota roadways since the start of 2022, the release states.
