BASKING RIDGE, NJ — The nor'easter is tearing through New Jersey and may continue through Tuesday. Here's how it's affecting Basking Ridge so far.

Snowfall

Forecasters projected up to 2 feet of snow in Somerset County throughout the storm, and the nor'easter certainly met the hype.

Someset County has been hit harder than almost any part of New Jersey, with snowfall of at least 15 inches throughout the county as of Monday afternoon. Bridgewater tops the county snowfall total at 19 inches Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Here's the National Weather Service's forecast for Basking Ridge as of 4 p.m. Monday:

  • Monday night: Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Areas of blowing snow before 8pm. Low around 28. Blustery, with a north wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.
  • Tuesday: Snow likely, mainly before 4pm. Cloudy, with a high near 32. North wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.
  • Tuesday night: A chance of snow, mainly before 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 25. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Traffic and Roads

The storm has caused several major traffic issues in Somerset County.

All lanes and exit 29 on Interstate 78 westbound closed because of a truck stuck in the snow, state officials reported just after 2 p.m. Monday. Read more: Truck Stuck In Snow Closes I-78 West In Bedminster

Around the same time, a jackknifed tractor-trailer caused lane closures on Interstate 287 north in Bridgewater. Two center lanes of the four-lane highway closed just south of Exit 14 for Route 22 in Bridgewater. Read more: Jackknifed Tractor-Trailer Closes Lanes On I-287 In Bridgewater

Closures

The Bernards Township School District held a virtual day Monday and will continue teaching remotely Tuesday. See here for scheduling information.

Many local businesses and facilities also closed Monday.

Outages

So far, so good. Jersey Central Power & Light hasn't reported any active outages as of 4 p.m. Monday in Basking Ridge. But residents can report outages to JCP&L by calling 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877), going online or texting OUT to 544487.
