BASKING RIDGE, NJ — A rise in hurtful and harmful speech across schools in the Bernards Township has prompted the district to host a special meeting.

The BT Connect meeting will be held on Monday, June 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ridge High School Cafeteria.

"Our focus will be on the rise in hurtful and harmful speech," said Superintendent Nick Markarian in the May 10 SOS Express.

"While the largest increase of inappropriate language related to race and/or national origin has been documented as HIB cases at Annin, there is an increase across the district," said Markarian.

Markarian previously address the district over the rise in hate speech in his Feb. 9's SOS Express.

"According to the New Jersey Anti-Bullying Task Force New Jersey schools have seen the number of bias-based incidents quadruple from 2018-2023," said Markarian referring to a Patch article. "In our own district’s Harassment Intimidation/Bullying (HIB) data, we have seen an increase with several confirmed HIB cases of this nature in each of the last couple of years."

Through the BT Connect meeting, Markarian is hoping the community can come together so that students, staff and families can share their experiences.

"What does everyone see going on? Where do you think it is coming from? What is the definition of Harassment Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) and how is it related to school climate and culture? What are we doing now and how can we improve?" said Markarian. We hope you can attend to participate in a positive and productive conversation."
