Heavy Snow Expected, Winter Storm Warning Issued For Basking Ridge

Bernards Township OEM and DPW are monitoring weather forecasts and are prepared to respond to the weather conditions, said the township.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Bernards Township is bracing for heavy snow overnight as projected snowfall amounts continue to increase and a Winter Storm Warning was issued through Tuesday.

"Bernards Township [Office of Emergency Management and Department of Public Works] are monitoring weather forecasts and are prepared to respond to the weather conditions," said the Township in an alert to residents on Monday.

The National Weather Service(NWS) is predicting 5 to 9 inches of snow could fall in Basking Ridge beginning on Monday night through Tuesday.

Temperatures will reach a high of 37 on Tuesday and snow, mainly before 1 p.m. which could be heavy at times.

It will also be breezy, with a northeast wind 15 to 20 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches is possible, according to NWS.

The Winter Storm Warning is in effect from midnight on Monday through 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Township reminded residents that parking on snow-covered streets is prohibited. Vehicles parked on the street are subject to a summons and being towed.

Depositing or throwing snow onto the street is also prohibited.

Residents are also reminded to check generators and snowblowers for proper operation before the storm begins. Always keep generators away from windows and doors and never operate them in enclosed spaces.

Check in on neighbors, especially the elderly or those that might need assistance. Don’t wait for a neighbor to need help to be a good friend.

  • Always operate generators outside and away from windows and doors.

In the event outages occur due to severe weather, customers without power are encouraged to report their outage by calling 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877), clicking the “Report Outage” link on www.firstenergycorp.com, or by texting out to 544487.

Customers should immediately report downed wires to 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877) or call their local police department. JCP&L reminds customers to stay away from downed wires, even if they believe they are no longer carrying electricity. Extra caution should be used in areas where downed lines are tangled with trees or other debris. Motorists are cautioned to treat intersections with inoperable traffic signals as four-way stops.
