Bear used to huddle in the corner but kitty whisperer and staff member Bobbie was able to get him to open up.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Sweet Bear had a rough start to life but after much love and care, this kitty is now open to love and adoption at Somerset Regional Animal Shelter.

Bear came to the shelter when he was five years old after being abused by one of his owners to the point where he just huddled in the corner of his cage, and did not want any human contact, said Friends of Somerset Regional Animal Shelter.

In early December, "Kitty whisperer" and staff member Bobbie brought Bear home to stay with her and her cats for a couple of months.

The change in the environment helped. Bear would let Bobbie pet him, he would come when she called, and he played with her cats, said the shelter.

When it was time for Bear to come to the shelter to find his future family, he was placed in the open cage-free cat room where he’s been doing well, said the shelter.

Bear will come out on his own and even lets people approach him and pet him. He loves to play with toys as long as there’s another cat with him.

"It’s important for this sweet boy to find the right home — a loving home with people who understand his past and give him time to build trust, and a feline pal to help him reassure him. Bear is a good boy who deserves a great home," said the shelter.

Come meet Bear at the shelter at 100 Commons Way in Bridgewater. The shelter is open daily from noon to 3:30 p.m.
