A Christmas Miracle: NJ Dog Adopted After Being In Shelter System For Over 1 Year

Bandit was adopted from Somerset Regional Animal Shelter on the day after Christmas after being in the sheltering system for over a year.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Bandit's Christmas wish has come true.

The 7-year-old Labrador shepherd mix was adopted on Sunday from the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter (SRAS) by Judy Lilien after being in the shelter system for more than one year.

"He's so nice. I don't understand why he didn't get adopted sooner. He's a beautiful dog," said Lilien, of Clinton.

"We're very happy," SRAS Assistant Shelter Manager Rose Tropeano said of Bandit's adoption.

"The power of the press," Lilien said.

The adoption was perfect timing for Lilien, who has always had pets in her life. She's owned cats, ferrets and even fostered dogs in the past.

Last week, Lilien's 8-year-old black retriever mix named Sadie began having medical issues, and ultimately she had to put her down on Christmas Eve.

Lilien and her niece both read the article on Christmas Day about Bandit and knew he was the one. The shelter was closed on Christmas, so Lilien showed up at the shelter the very next day as soon as it opened.

She took him for a walk and stopped at her car to throw her purse in when Bandit jumped right in. Lilien took him out and continued their walk and as they finished, he ran right back to her car.

"He knew," said Lilien.

The shelter staff was so overjoyed with Bandit's adoption they made a cake. They also gave Lilien food, treats, toys, and a blanket for Bandit to go home with.

Since being home, Bandit has not left Lilien's side.

"He is quite the Velcro dog," said Lilien, as Bandit follows her from room to room.

"He really is beautiful," said Lilien.

The shelter, at 100 Commons Way in Bridgewater, is a nonprofit organization that services pets in the Somerset County area. The shelter is always in need of donations. For more information on making donations or adoptions visit srasnj.org or facebook.com/somersetregionalanimalshelter.
