Cranford Superintendent Says Safety Is #1 Priority Post Texas Shooting

Superintendent Rubin reassured the community that the district is taking steps to improve school safety in the wake of the recent tragedy.

CRANFORD, NJ — Following the mass shooting that took place at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday, taking the lives of 19 students and 2 adults, Cranford Superintendent Scott Rubin sent a message to the community regarding school safety.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic event that took place today at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas," Rubin wrote. "Our hearts go out to the families, the school staff, and their community. Tragedies such as this are beyond anyone’s comprehension and prompt us to hold our children even closer."

Rubin also took this opportunity to reassure the community that school safety is the district's "highest priority." He said Cranford Public Schools continually reviews and improves its safety procedures and makes facility improvements to address safety concerns.

"We are fortunate to have an outstanding collaborative working relationship with the Cranford Police Department, Fire Department, and Office of Emergency Management, who offer us guidance and support in these initiatives," Rubin wrote.

He said the schools regularly practice security measures and the district will continue to take steps to provide a safe and secure school environment for all students.

In addition, New Jersey Acting Attorney General Matthew Platkin announced that NJ State Police will ramp up their presence at the Garden State schools where troopers are the primary law enforcement.

All 21 New Jersey county prosecutors have also been instructed to increase local police presence at schools in their jurisdictions.
