Former Metuchen Councilman James Dudley Dies At 66

Dudley was only the second black Council Member in Metuchen's history.

METUCHEN, NJ — Former Metuchen Councilman, James Bernard "Bernie" Dudley, died last week after a long battle with cancer. He was 66.

Dudley was first elected to Council in 1986 and served two terms. He was only the second black Council Member in Metuchen’s history.

Metuchen Mayor Jonathan M Busch condoled Dudley’s death in a Facebook post.

“During his time on the Council, Dudley focused on issues of affordable housing and public health. He worked closely with our Police Department, through which he developed knowledge that enabled him to eventually serve as an instructor at the Middlesex County Police Academy,” Busch said.

Born in Newark, Dudley in Metuchen where he attended Metuchen Public Schools, graduating from high school in 1975, according to his obituary.

He received a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and International Relations from Elmira College and in 1982 Bernie was awarded a Juris Doctor, Litigation at Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University

He worked at several law firms until his health began to fail. Dudley served on Metuchen Council for two terms and was even appointed interim Mayor, according to the obituary.

“Bernie was an enthusiastic public servant, a try advocate for the people,” his obituary said.

“Bernie was passionate about the law, he enjoyed being a lawyer, he genuinely wanted to help people. He firmly believed 'the little guy' should have the same exceptional representation as those with wealth. He exemplified 'and justice for all'.”

Dudley was passionate about music and martial arts. He was an exceptional Martial Artist and held multiple certificates and studied under Dan Inosanto and was a very present influence at the Princeton Academy of Martial Arts.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his Sister Sharon Louise Dudley.

He is survived by his namesake son Shawn "Primo" Tyson (Dina) of Piscataway, sisters, brothers, nephews and nieces.

“Thank you, Bernie, for everything you did for our community,” Busch said. “Metuchen will miss you.”
