St. Thomas Aquinas Edison Mourns Death Of Head Football Coach

EDISON, NJ — Brian Meeney, head football coach of St. Thomas Aquinas, died Thursday, March 14. He was 46.

Meeney led the St. Thomas team to a 9-1 season last fall. He died of a heart attack while on his way to school, reported NJ.com.

“We are saddened to inform you of the passing of our football coach, Brian Meeney. At this difficult time, please keep the Meeney family and the STA family in your prayers,” the school said in a statement.

Meeney previously coached at Newark East Side, Memorial of West New York, Bergen Tech, and McCorriston. He also coached basketball and softball for the Maywood Recreation. He was a member of the National Education Association, the New Jersey Education Association and the Bergen County Education Association, according to his obituary published on Trinka-Faustini Funeral Service website.

Meeney is survived by his wife Randi Cabana and two children — Madison and Reilly. A fundraiserhas been set up to help Meeney's family with funeral expenses.

"Brian was a proud, loving and involved father who dedicated his life to positively impacting the youth around him through his love of sports," the organizers of the GoFundMe said. "He was also a devoted and loving father and husband, and while nothing can fill his void, we ask you to be there for his family in their time of need. Any contribution is greatly appreciated and will directly support the family with funeral expenses and unexpected costs from his sudden passing."

On Monday, the fundraiser reached $21,561 of the $25,000 goal.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, on 439 Maywood Ave., Maywood.

The Superintendent of Maywood Schools, Michael Jordan, is making the parking lot of Maywood Public School available to attendees of the visiting, according to the obituary. The parking lot is located at the north end of the school.
