Global Gloucester Day Celebration Coming To Camden County

Local events include an oral presentation of township history and a ribbon cutting of a new elevated walkway, an event organizer said.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Global Gloucester Day will be celebrated in Gloucester Township and 11 other similarly-named places around the world on Saturday, organizers said.

Locally, events kick off at 10 a.m. with an oral presentation of the Camden County municipality's history at the Historic 1756 Gabreil Daveis Tavern Museum House in the township, according to Sharon Mickle, president of Gloucester Township's Historic and Scenic Preservation Committee.

Then, there will be a ribbon cutting of a new elevated walkway at the Historic 1756 Gabreil Daveis Tavern Museum House, as well as trail and house tours, according to Mickle. At noon, bells will ring throughout Gloucester Township and the following locations around the world, according to Mickle:

Saturday's events will "hopefully will bring the waterways of the North Branch of Timber Creek and the Otter Branch more into light and help to create an understanding of the importance of our waterways in the past and now in the present," she said. Saturday's events "also honor our past and Pocahontas’s respect of rivers and streams along with her sense of willingness to help others.

Global Gloucester Day began in 2017, when leaders of Gloucester Township, Virginia, and Gloucester Township in the United Kingdom commemorated the 400th anniversary of the burial of Pocahontas, the Native American involved with the first European settlement in America, according to Mickle.

Those two municipalities chosen to honor Pocahontas because she was born in Gloucester, Virginia, and died in Gloucester, England, Mickle said.
