Manasquan Police Arrest Assault-By-Auto Suspect On Gun Charges

Manasquan police arrested a man on gun and drug charges after he tried to hit two police officers, authorities said.​

MANASQUAN – Manasquan police arrested a man on gun and drug charges after he tried to hit two police officers, authorities said.

The incident began on Monday at approximately 12:30 a.m. officers from the Manasquan Police Department were requested by Brielle Police Department to assist in a prisoner transport.

Officers responded to the area of Route 70 and Burnt Tavern Road where Brielle police had conducted a motor vehicle stop. After an investigation had been completed, Brielle police placed four individuals under arrest for possession of marijuana.

Brielle then turned over one prisoner to Manasquan officers to transport. A subsequent search yielded two loaded handguns concealed in his pants by two of our officers. Both firearms were secured and turned over to Brielle police.

Later that morning, at approximately 1:15 a.m. officers from the Manasquan Police Department received a call for service in Brielle. Officers from the Manasquan Police Department responded to the area of Route 35 near Evergreen Avenue on a report of a suspicious/abandoned motor vehicle.

Before arriving on scene, officers received information that the vehicle was possibly tied to a prior incident in Brick Township where two of their officers were struck and then the vehicle eluded them. After an investigation had been completed, Manasquan officers placed Darius Edwards, 24, of Brooklyn under arrest and later charged him for possession of marijuana over 50 grams, intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a firearm without a permit, possession of a large capacity magazine, possession of a firearm while committing a drug crime, and multiple other charges, police said.

Edwards was subsequently identified as the individual who operated the vehicle when two officers were struck earlier that evening in Brick Township, police said.. Darius was later charged by Brick Police Department for two counts of assault-by-auto, eluding, obstruction, possession of marijuana, as well as motor vehicle violations.
