Monmouth County Man Tried To Sell 40 Grams Of Fentanyl In Area

MONMOUTH COUNTY – A Monmouth County man on Wednesday admitted possessing and trying to sell more than 40 grams of fentanyl, Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig announced.

The amount of fentanyl was enough to kill 20,000 people, according to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

Derrick Norwood, 58, of Neptune, New Jersey, pleaded guilty by videoconference before U.S. District Judge Anne E. Thompson to one count of possession with intent to distribute more than 40 grams of fentanyl.

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court:

On July 18, 2019, Norwood knowingly possessed 39 bricks, or 1,982 individual glassine bags, of heroin mixed with fentanyl inside a safe in his residence in Neptune.

Norwood admitted that he possessed the heroin-fentanyl mixture for the purpose of distributing it to others in and around Monmouth County, according to a press release from Honig's office.

The charge of possession with intent to distribute more than 40 grams of fentanyl carries a statutory mandatory minimum term of five years in prison, a maximum of 40 years in prison, and a fine up to $5 million. Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 23, 2021.
