MANCHESTER, NJ — A Manchester Township bicyclist is hospitalized after he was injured Thursday night when he was hit by a minivan as he rode along Route 37, Manchester police said.

The 14-year-old suffered serious injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening and was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune following the crash, Capt. Albert Vega said

The crash happened about 11:20 p.m. Thursday, Vega said.

Frederick Grimm, 55, of Manahawkin was driving a black 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan east on Route 37, and as he crossed Commonwealth Boulevard hit the bicyclist, who was crossing despite the green traffic signal on Route 37, Vega said.

"The bicycle did not appear to be equipped with any illuminating lamps as required by NJ law when a bicycle is in operation at night," he said.

Assisting at the scene were EMTs from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Medical Services, and paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing, but at this point, failure to yield is the primary contributing factor in the crash, Vega said.

Patrolman Keith Douglas of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit is investigating.
