Matawan Historical Society Celebrates Burrowes Mansion 300th Anniversary

The Matawan Historical Society is proud to present an historic weekend of events coming June 2nd – 4th in honor of the Burrowes Mansion of Main Street and its 300 years of history. The Matawan Historical Society is going all out to commemorate this significant event of Matawan history. For the first time in nearly four decades, a reenactment of the raid will be held at the Burrowes Mansion and will include a live broadcast and an entire weekend of events. The Matawan Historical Society has retained a professional reenactment organization to perform throughout the weekend. The events will include an attack on Burrowes Mansion Reenactment, Burrowes Mansion Tours, Firearms/Cannon firings & demonstrations, Colonial Encampment, Cocktail Sponsor Reception, Candlelight Vigil, Craft & Trade Demonstration Kiosks, and Historic Sites Walking Tours.

“It has taken a tremendous effort on the part of so many to bring this event to you. I extend my gratitude to the wonderful group of dedicated volunteers and members of the Matawan Historical Society for all their hard work and to our sponsors for their generous support. Finally, a special thank you to Mayor Joe Altomonte and the Matawan Borough Council for providing us with the great DPW staff, Police and Fire departments to assist us with this event. It has been a wonderful and successful collaboration and I am excited and honored to have been a part of it.” stated Cathy Zavorskas, President of the Historical Society Board.

The Burrowes home was owned by the Burrowes family, true American Patriots, who risked their lives and wealth to support America’s fight for Independence. John Burrowes, a member of the Sons of Liberty, and his family provided crucial supplies for Washington’s troops during the American Revolutionary War. The Burrowes’ home became the assembly spot of the first New Jersey Militia and was attacked in 1778, where several patriots lost their lives in the battle. An example was made of the Burrowes Mansion when all its contents were burned, along with all the surrounding granaries and family property. The reenactment on June 3rd is a highly anticipated event for the Matawan Historical Society, its friends, fans, and supporters.

“The story of the raid at Burrowes Mansion is one local story of the fight for American Independence in New Jersey and its people who risked and often sacrificed everything- including their very lives for the cause for freedom.“ stated Kurtis Roinestad, Vice President of the Historical Society Board.

The Matawan Historical Society is a volunteer, non-profit organization founded in 1969. Its goals are the preservation of and the education about local history. The Society members furnish and operate the Burrowes Mansion Museum, maintain the collections, and serve as tour guides at the museum. The Society and its members undertake projects to make history available to the public. These have included indexing historical records, producing publications, and providing speakers for outside groups.
